As our blog followers know, every month we host a CampusWIN Academy on a topic related to the World Economic Forum's "Future of Jobs" report. This month's topic was "People Management."
We were hosted by the Co-Founder of Joint Idea, Markus Lehto, and his team. Our program kicked off with a discussion of the future of work, led by Markus, who shared his own career journey and what he thinks the future will look like. Markus explained that the evolution of society, especially in the tech world, is changing faster than we think and it’s up to us to be creative as we tackle future problems and goals. He emphasized the importance of learning skills such as people management and others from the WEF 2020 report, and reminded us to “never stop growing.” Markus recommended that we seek inspiration from “The House of Beautiful Business” which helps launch new products in an ethical way.
After this interactive session, we took a moment to celebrate Markus’s birthday! Although he jokes that he still doesn’t know what he wants to be when he grows up, he showed us that “the future is ours to create.”
Next we went straight to business. Each CampusWINner leads or contributes to a committee at CampusWIN. Our committee leads each took a turn to present the latest happenings in their committees. As is our tradition, we ended the ACOLD session with storytelling and reflections.
After lunch, we had an exciting session with Nihal Serra Güngör from İş Kavramları. Our campus leaders each completed a Talent Insights Test at their orientation in September, learning their colors and motivators. Nihal helped us take our colors to the next level and implement them into our lives and the workplace. She also gave CampusWINners advice for the job application process, from how to tailor our resumes for different positions to seeking opportunities that enhance our work.
Our last event of the day was our Masters Panel with Yaprak Metin, Executive Counsellor to the Board at Toksöz Group and Berna Tuncel Cigsar, Human Resources Director at Enerya (STFA Holding). Moderated by TurkishWIN & BinYaprak Founder Melek Pulatkonak, this roundtable discussion hit every topic we could think of, from being an ideal manager to what it’s like as a woman in the workplace.
Yaprak Metin shared that although our career journeys may be tough in the beginning, these experiences are valuable because they teach you what you like and don’t like. Adaptability is a major asset, and your major does not matter so long as you can adapt to changing tech and industries in your career path. Yaprak recommended we check out the book Sapiens, by Yubah Noah Harari, to learn more about how our way of thinking has evolved.
Berna Tuncel Cigsar’s inspiration comes from her teammates. Relationships - personal or professional - are key, and help us get through life. She shared an especially riveting line: “I have many titles: spouse, daughter, mom, and businesswoman.” Berna recommended we check out the books From Complexity to Simplicity by Simon Collinson, Triggers by Marshall Goldsmith, and Strengths Finder by Tom Rath. She also recommended we sign up for the Singularity University newsletter, to become a better global citizen. We are so grateful to Yaprak and Berna for a fantastic session to end the day!
We are counting down to the next CampusWIN Academy Day in December. In the meantime, check out all the fun we had at Academy Day on our Facebook album. We are thankful to Joint Idea for hosting us at their lovely office.
